Connor McDavid’s contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers remains the biggest storyline hanging over the franchise. The new NHL season could shape his decision, but whispers suggest the captain already has some clarity about what lies ahead.

Fans are anxious, and the organization knows every passing day without news adds more weight to the uncertainty.

Connor McDavid and his loyalty to teammates

For years, McDavid has openly stated that his dream is to win in Edmonton. Those words fuel hope among Oilers fans, but also frustration. If loyalty runs as deep as it seems, why hasn’t a deal been finalized? According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the bond McDavid shares with his teammates might hold the key.

“The thing that you notice about McDavid, is that he likes this current group. He’s loyal to them,” Friedman explained on The FAN Hockey Show. “I just don’t see him leaving those guys while the [championship] window is still open. We heard McDavid talk about being great this year.”Edmonton has been agonizingly close, losing back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals. That signals promise, but the NHL is unforgiving. Rosters change, chemistry fades, and success rarely lingers forever.

Even McDavid’s brilliance can’t shield the Oilers from time catching up to their veteran core.

Why short-term might be the answer

Friedman added a sobering reminder: “Some of [the Oilers’ players] are older and Father Time is undefeated. Eventually it will come for those guys, too. But as long as [McDavid] thinks they are good enough… This is one of the reasons I believe he stays short-term.”If McDavid opts for a shorter extension, it gives Edmonton more chances to prove they can deliver the Cup he craves.

Winning would silence doubts, but building a sustainable future matters just as much. A youthful core surrounding their superstar could keep the Oilers competitive beyond this current window. For now, McDavid’s silence speaks volumes. His loyalty appears intact, but the Oilers know they must back it up with action. A championship—or at least a plan toward one—could be the only way to secure their captain’s long-term commitment. Also Read: Did Clayton Kershaw do enough to be remembered as MLB’s greatest left-handed pitcher of all time?
