Connor McDavid makes NHL history (Imagn Images)
Connor McDavid continues to make history in the NHL, yet the Edmonton Oilers can’t seem to turn his brilliance into consistent wins. On Saturday, the Oilers fell to the New Jersey Devils, despite another remarkable performance from their captain.
It’s becoming an all-too-familiar story for Edmonton — McDavid breaks records, but the scoreboard doesn’t fall in their favor.
Connor McDavid extends incredible streak against Devils
According to NHLPR, “Connor McDavid (17 GP vs. NJD) became the fifth active player with a point in every regular-season meeting against a single opponent (min. 10 GP).” The Oilers superstar now has seven goals and 24 assists for 31 points in just 17 games against New Jersey. That kind of dominance over one franchise is rare, even for a player of McDavid’s caliber.
But true to his nature, McDavid isn’t satisfied with personal milestones. During his contract discussions, he made it clear that he values winning over individual accolades. His focus remains firmly on leading Edmonton to the Stanley Cup — something that has eluded the franchise for nearly three decades. “Recording two points against the Devils in the middle of October means nothing if we lose,” has long been the sentiment behind McDavid’s relentless pursuit of team success.
Oilers’ offensive issues still linger despite McDavid’s heroics
The Oilers’ early-season struggles are concerning. Sitting 10th in the Western Conference with a 2-2-1 record, their offensive depth hasn’t looked as sharp as expected. The offseason departures of key veterans like Corey Perry and Evander Kane have left noticeable gaps in their lineup. While McDavid and Leon Draisaitl continue to produce at elite levels, the secondary scoring has been inconsistent — a problem Edmonton thought it had solved last postseason.
Still, there’s no reason to hit the panic button just yet. The Oilers have weathered slow starts before, rebounding to make deep playoff runs in back-to-back seasons. If McDavid maintains his dominant form and the supporting cast regains its rhythm, Edmonton could once again be a serious contender. For now, McDavid’s brilliance remains the constant in a team still searching for balance — and that long-awaited Stanley Cup glory. Also Read: NHL announces major updates for Penguins’ Global Series in Sweden with new fan experiences revealed
