California’s Democratic governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday announced his plans to make a decision on whether to run for President in 2028.
While responding to a question on whether he would give serious thought to a White House bid after the 2026 elections during an interview with CBS News, Newsom said: “Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise. I’d just be lying. And I’m not – I can’t do that."
His term as governor will end in January 2027 and he will not be able to run again due to term limits. “Fate will determine that," he said.
The Guardian quoted a CBS poll stating earlier this month that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters said Newsom should run for president in 2028.
It further stated that after Trump took office, Newsom’s favourability has increased to an average of 33.5% from about 30% and his unfavorability has decreased from an average of over 40% to 38.4%, according to Decision Desk HQ.
According to The Guardian, the California governor has emerged as a high-profile critic of the Trump administration through his social media accounts and push of a ballot measure that would increase Democrats’ congressional seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts – a move that has made him a target for critics.
Previously, Donald Trump’s secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, had announced his plans to pull federal funds from California and even threatened to revoke California’s ability to issue commercial driver’s licenses. “I’m about to pull $160m from California," he said.
Earlier, the US homeland security said an undocumented semi truck driver crashed killing three people and injuring four.
a 21-year-old Indian national was arrested in Southern California for causing a fiery crash that killed at least three people. He was allegedly driving an 18-wheeler truck under the influence.
The accused has been identified as Jashanpreet Singh. According to the police, Singh’s semi-truck plowed into slow-moving traffic on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County, killing three people and injuring several others.
Dashcam footage revealed that the truck did not brake before the collision, while toxicology reports confirmed that Singh was under the influence of a substance at the time of the crash.
As per the Department of Homeland Security, Singh was not a lawful immigrant and that ICE has lodged a detainer following his arrest. He faces multiple charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Singh had illegally entered the US through the southern border in 2022 and was released under the Biden administration’s “alternatives to detention" policy while awaiting an immigration hearing, Fox News reported.
