A 35-year-old convict admitted to Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology for treatment escaped custody, hoodwinking security officials on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Chaitanya Kalyani, was convicted in a theft case and was shifted from Vijapura prison to Parappana Agarahara Central Prison Complex on health grounds. He was suffering from cancer and was admitted to Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology for treatment.

The prison personnel, who were deployed at the hospital, had gone to collect medical records when Chaitanya managed to open the handcuffs and escape. The entire act was recorded by CCTV cameras in the hospital, which was recovered by the police.

The prison staff soon alerted their office, before raising a complaint with the jurisdictional Siddapura Police Station.
