A convict given a fixed-term life sentence must be released after completion of the prescribed period, the Supreme Court said on Tuesday, adding that there is no need for a remission order as needed in cases where convicts are sentenced to spend their full lives in prison.
The top court made the observation while ordering the release of Sukhdev Pehalwan, convicted in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, noting that he must be released from jail as he has finished his 20-year sentence.
