Cory Sandhagen is approaching his return to UFC 320 with a sense of purpose. The confidence boost that has supported him is priceless. The Colorado fighter, known for his smart movement and sharp instincts inside the Octagon, says this camp has been different.
Much of it comes down to the trust he’s built with his coaches, Carrington Banks and Trevor Wittman.Sandhagen has always been a cerebral fighter. He likes to understand every technique and every adjustment. But now he says he’s learning to trust his coaches completely. “You’re too close to your own fighting to see it clearly,” Sandhagen said from High Altitude Martial Arts in Denver. “If you have people around you who know what they’re doing, you just need to listen. That’s what I do now, and it’s been a game-changer.”Also Read: Merab Dvalishvili’s coach says UFC Champ looks “brutal” ahead of Cory Sandhagen clash at UFC 320
Carrington Banks and Cory Sandhagen with big aims
Banks and Sandhagen have worked together closely since 2020. He currently serves as his head coach and brings a strong wrestling background. But it’s not just about technique. Sandhagen credits Banks for helping him develop self-belief. “Good coaches can teach moves,” he said. “Great coaches make you believe in yourself. That’s what Carrington does—he pushes me, but he also makes me trust myself.”
Trevor Wittman was associated with Sandhagen last year. He has trained a lot of praiseworthy champions. Under Wittman’s guidance, Sandhagen has gained the mindset of a champion. He admits his July 2024 fight against Umar Nurmagomedov didn’t go perfectly. He stuffed most of Nurmagomedov’s takedowns but struggled to find his rhythm. But he sees it as a stepping stone.
The importance of the fight and every other factor linked
With Merab Dvalishvili sharing the same platform in Las Vegas, Sandhagen says he feels unbeatable. “I’ve never felt this confident,” he said. “My skills are sharp, my mind is ready, and I know I’m in the best shape of my career.”
For Sandhagen, UFC 320 holds a much more critical value than a fight. It is clearly about proving himself. Additionally, his zeal for claiming a belt and bringing that victory back to his gym is highly anticipated. This would act as a rightful reward for years of hard work. With world-class coaches, refined skills, and belief in himself, Cory Sandhagen is ready to make his mark on the bantamweight division.
