Two people were killed in an accident involving a lorry and a car near T. Begur on the northern outskirts of Bengaluru on Friday.
The deceased have been identified as Shivanagouda Patil (63) and Pramila (52). Patil and his wife, Pramila, were residents of Rona in Gadag district. Three other occupants of the multi-utility vehicle sustained injuries, one of whom was in critical condition.
According to police, the incident occurred on the Tumakuru–Bengaluru Highway around 5.45 a.m., about one km from T. Begur, near Nelamangala.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was driven by Sunil, a driver. Patil, Pramila, Poovamma, and Basavaraj were travelling in the car from Rona to Bengaluru. They were on their way to a hospital in the city for Poovamma’s heart check-up, as she had recently undergone surgery. Poovamma is Pramila’s mother.
Sunil was reportedly driving at high speed when the car crashed into the rear of a stationary lorry that was parked after it ran out of fuel. Patil, who was seated on the left side of the car, and Pramila, who was seated behind him, suffered severe head injuries, and they died on the spot. Poovamma also sustained head injuries and was undergoing treatment, the police said.
“The family left their home on Thursday evening and intended to meet the doctor on Friday,” a police officer involved in the investigation said.
The Nelamangala Traffic Police rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies. The police have registered a case against both Sunil and the lorry driver under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash and negligent driving.
