A Malaysian couple travelled over 370 km from Kuala Lumpur to Perak after watching a video of a scenic cable car ride on social media. But when they arrived at the destination, they found out the place didn’t exist. The video that inspired their trip had been created using artificial intelligence (AI).
According to a report in The Independent UK, the elderly couple had travelled to Pengkalan Hulu in the western state of Perak last month. They had come across what looked like a news segment by a local channel, “TV Rakyat", promoting the “Kuak Skyride," a cable car ride in Kuak Hulu. The video showed tourists queuing at a ticket booth, taking photos and enjoying the ride through forests, streams and even a deer enclosure near Baling Mountain.
It also included a woman reporter with a mic who interviewed visitors and later enjoyed a luxurious meal as part of the experience. In one scene, an elderly woman performs a handstand. As she flips, her body warps unnaturally into a blob before landing back on her feet. This clearly is one of the signs that the video wasn’t real.
According to a post on Threads shared on June 30 by a hotel worker named Daya in Gerik, the couple had asked her if she had visited the cable car in Kuak Hulu. That’s when she informed them the video was AI-generated.
“I was so shocked… I explained to the auntie that the video was (made by AI) and not real," Daya wrote in her post, as reported by several local outlets.
But the woman seemed confused and responded, “Why would anyone want to lie? There was even a reporter (in the video)." She added that she didn’t see any comments pointing out that the video was fake and even mentioned wanting to sue the journalist.
Daya said she had to clarify that the journalist featured in the video wasn’t a real person either. When she asked the couple why they didn’t check with their children before travelling, they admitted they felt embarrassed. “Please, all of you diligently ask your parents who are travelling, ask where you are going from KL to Perak," Daya added in her post.
Authorities have since confirmed there is no cable car project in the region. “Of course, it doesn’t exist… but I admit, it was exciting to watch. We were entertained, even if it was just AI-generated content," Baling district officer Yazlan Sunardie Che Yahaya told Sinar Harian newspaper.
Baling’s acting district police chief, Ahmad Salimi Md Ali, said no formal complaints or reports had been filed in connection with the video. But he urged the public to verify content before sharing. “Checks conducted in both Baling and Pengkalan Hulu have confirmed that no such cable car project exists," he told Malay Mail.
He also stated that police could take action under existing laws if such content creates unnecessary panic or disrupts public order.
