The Andhra Pradesh State committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday condemned the attack on Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke during a rally in Jaipur.
In a statement, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said the CJP has faced sustained criticism and hostility on social media since its inception. He alleged that such hostility had intensified amid growing demands from sections of the youth for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Terming the assault a disturbing attack on democratic dissent, Mr. Rao said targeting individuals for expressing opposition to government policies reflected increasing authoritarian tendencies. It was the responsibility of the government to ensure the safety and security of those participating in democratic protests and political activities, he said.
Instead of addressing the concerns and discontent among young people, resorting to violence against dissenting voices was unacceptable and condemnable, he said. Attacks on political activists and critics, he added, erode democratic values and weaken the constitutional right to freedom of expression.
Mr. Rao called upon citizens, democratic organisations, intellectuals and civil society groups to unite against such attacks and extend support to democratic movements and peaceful protests. He urged the authorities to identify and take strict action against those responsible for the assault and ensure that democratic rights are protected.
