CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao has appealed to HRD and IT Minister N. Lokesh to establish a Sports University to promote sports and nurture grassroots talent.
In a letter addressed to Mr. Lokesh on Tuesday, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said in view of the growing national and international recognition for sports, Andhra Pradesh must take steps to identify and train talented persons in various disciplines.
Citing the recent victory of the Indian women’s cricket team in the One-Day World Cup match in Mumbai, he said the nation rejoiced, but the players themselves acknowledged that their achievement was largely due to the support of parents, friends, and coaches, and not the government.
“Despite the existence of associations like the BCCI and ICC, there is no structured mechanism to promote sportspersons at the grassroots level,” he said.
