Frustrated over prolonged power outages and the resultant drinking water shortage, more than 50 residents of Chinnaiya Chathiram village in Pudukottai district held a road blockade on Sunday carrying empty water pots.
Trichy: CPI will hold statewide protests on June 29 demanding that the Centre release all pending funds to Tamil Nadu. Addressing reporters in Mayiladuthurai on Monday, party state secretary M Veerapandiyan also demanded stringent action against sexual assault-related crimes, and called for more awareness campaigns.He was in Mayiladuthurai to commemorate former CPI state committee member R Idumbaiyan, who recently passed away. Veerapandiyan told reporters that along with police mobilisation, students and political parties must lead awareness campaigns to prevent sexual assaults on women and young children.About Singappen special force teams, Veerapandiyan said district administrations should review shortage of personnel and make appointments accordingly. CPI state executive committee has passed a resolution demanding complete waiver of farmers’ loans. “The state govt must take serious efforts to waive the loans, and the Union govt extend its support by immediately releasing all pending funds due to Tamil Nadu,” he said.
Veerapandiyan said the chief minister must remain resolute on the Mekedatu dam issue, and prevent its construction.
