Agartala: CPM in Tripura has commenced a week-long protest across the state, focusing on a three-point charter of demands. The agitation, which began on Monday, will continue until Oct 31, targeting all district and subdivision headquarters, according to party state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury. The protest aims to address the increasing flow of contraband and drugs in the state. Chaudhury highlighted the need for the arrest of those involved in the transportation of large quantities of banned cough syrup, which was recently seized at Jirania railway station in Agartala. In addition to tackling drug-related issues, CPM is demanding fast-track trials for individuals recently arrested for crimes against women.
Chaudhury criticized the state govt, accusing the ruling BJP-led alliance of fostering an environment of increased corruption and crime, which he claims has led to a decline in social and moral standards.Chaudhury referenced several recent incidents, including the brutal assault and murder of a housewife in Mirza, Udaipur, the rape and murder of a 72-year-old woman in Taidu, and the case of a 14-month-old child who was raped and buried alive.
While suspects have been arrested, Chaudhury stressed the importance of expedited trials, citing a pattern of acquittals for key offenders over the past seven and a half years. He also pointed out that two significant drug shipments, valued at over a crore, were intercepted on Oct 16 and 19. Chaudhury expressed concern over the lack of public information regarding the transport or logistics companies involved, despite Indian Railways’ requirement for complete documentation of sender and receiver information. He called for stringent action against those responsible and those attempting to shield them.Furthermore, CPM is advocating for financial assistance from the Abhaya Fund for the mother of the murdered 14-month-old child in Kadamtala, emphasizing the need for compassionate support for victims of such heinous crimes.
