As part of a special drive launched against overstaying foreigners and landlords who are illegally providing them with places on rent, the North Division police have registered 23 cases since January this year.
As per rules, landlords while renting out their premises to foreign nationals have to submit an application to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and the jurisdictional police, along with copies of their tenant’s passport and visa. This will help the police to keep a tab on the foreign nationals and also to ensure their security, a senior police officer said.
As per the report hundreds of foreign nationals from different countries are living in the city even after visa expiry, and efforts are on to trace them down.
However, many landlords are either unaware of this rule or do not follow the same. The police are now booking cases against such landlords under the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939.
City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh advised the landlords to follow the rules to avoid legal action.
