After leading Portugal to a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, Ronaldo spoke to reporters in the mixed zone but refused to answer questions related to Messi.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals on Tuesday to help Portugal crush Uzbekistan 5-0 and secure their first win of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The 41-year-old scored his first goal of this year’s tournament in the sixth minute of the match at NRG Stadium in Houston and added another in the 39th minute of the first half.

Ronaldo’s brace came a day after Lionel Messi also scored twice for Argentina in their second Group J match against Austria at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The two goals Ronaldo scored against Uzbekistan helped him surpass Messi as the oldest player to score a brace in a FIFA World Cup match.

Ronaldo was 41 years and 138 days old on June 23, 2026, when he scored twice against Uzbekistan, while Messi was 38 years and 363 days old when he netted a brace for Argentina against Austria at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on June 22, 2026.

In the list of the oldest players to score a brace in FIFA World Cup history, Ronaldo and Messi are followed by Roger Milla of Cameroon. Milla scored two goals against Colombia in the 1990 FIFA World Cup at the age of 38 years and 34 days.

Ronaldo’s brace against Uzbekistan also helped him break Portugal’s record for the most goals scored in FIFA World Cup history. He has now scored 10 goals in 24 World Cup appearances, surpassing Eusébio, who found the back of the net nine times during the 1966 edition of the tournament.

Had Ronaldo managed to score one more goal against Uzbekistan, he would have become the oldest player to score a hat-trick in a FIFA World Cup match.
