Cyber crooks dupe women on false marriage promises and sending expensive gold and gifts in Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM: More than ten women from parts of the Vizag city lost over Rs20 lakh after being tricked by the cyber fraudster who posed as NRIs and proposed marriage.A 40-year-old woman, residing in Gajuwaka locality came in contact with a fraudster through a matrimonial website a few months ago.

He claimed to be a businessman working abroad and developed an online conversation with her.

Later, the fraudster promised to marry her.However, he told her he had sent her expensive gifts, including gold ornaments, electronic gadgets and a few others, which the woman believed.Later, she started receiving calls from people claiming to be Customs officials and other central authorities, asking her to pay towards various charges to deliver the gift.

Even then, the woman didn’t realize that it was a trap and transferred over Rs2.5 lakh. Even after that, they continued calling her, asking to transfer more money.In another incident, a widow from Vizag city was duped of Rs five lakh by the cyber crooks on a matrimonial site after giving false promises of marrying her. She also believed the fraudster and deposited over Rs five lakh to claim the expensive gifts and later she realized that she was cheated.

The fraudsters have duped more than ten women in recent times with false marriage promises. Though the number of victims is more, some may not approach the police due to various reasons, including embarrassment, said a police officer.The police observed that the victims not only gave their savings, but also took some loans and financial help from others for helping the cyber crooks as the fraudster promised to marry them.We have been appealing to the women, who were in search of a groom on matrimonial sites, don’t fall prey to cybercrimes. In some incidents the women were duped on the guise of expensive gifts sent by (would-be husbands-fraudsters) while in some cases the fraudsters demanded money from the women to solve financial problems related to their business abroad, the police added.
