In view of the approaching Cyclone Montha, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has cancelled 43 train services scheduled between October 27 and 29 as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety.
The cancellations affect several major routes connecting key cities such as Visakhapatnam, Koraput, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Guntur, Tirupati, Berhampur, Cuttack, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Chennai. Officials said the decision was taken to prevent disruptions to rail traffic in areas likely to be hit by the cyclone.
In an official update, the East Coast Railway posted the complete list of cancelled trains on its social media handles. Passengers have been urged to check train status and revised schedules before travelling. They can verify the latest information through the official railway website or by contacting inquiry centres.
South Central Railway Steps Up Preparedness
The South Central Railway (SCR) has also gone into high alert mode in anticipation of the cyclone’s impact. Railway officials have identified high-risk zones and begun implementing precautionary measures across affected divisions.
SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava visited vulnerable areas to assess ground conditions and directed staff to remain on standby. After his field inspection, he reached Vijayawada, where he chaired a special review meeting with divisional officials.
The discussions focused on ensuring passenger safety, train movement coordination, and emergency response readiness during the cyclone. Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Mohit Sonakia briefed the GM on the steps already taken, including deployment of backup teams and real-time monitoring systems.
‘Every Department Must Stay Alert’: GM Srivastava
Speaking at the review, GM Srivastava stressed the need for complete inter-departmental coordination and proactive monitoring.
“The cyclone’s intensity can increase suddenly. Every department — operations, engineering, electrical, mechanical, and medical — must stay alert and work in close coordination," he said.
He directed officials to establish special control rooms at key railway stations, ensuring round-the-clock presence of officers to address passenger concerns immediately.
Safety Checks And Emergency Readiness
The General Manager also instructed officials to closely monitor railway bridges, tracks, and water flow levels in cyclone-affected zones. Heavy rainfall and strong winds could pose serious safety risks, he cautioned.
He ordered deployment of special patrolling teams to continuously assess track and bridge conditions, ensuring quick detection of damage or obstruction.
Digital locomotives, mobile rescue teams, and emergency response units have been placed on standby to act swiftly in case of any untoward incident.
Passengers Advised To Stay Updated
With the cyclone expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to coastal Andhra and Odisha, both ECoR and SCR have appealed to passengers to stay informed.
Travellers are advised to:
- Check train status and rescheduling updates before departure.
- Avoid unnecessary travel in cyclone-affected areas.
- Follow instructions issued by railway and disaster management authorities.
Officials reiterated that passenger safety remains the top priority and assured that services will resume once weather conditions improve and tracks are declared safe.
