The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for 23 of the 26 districts in Andhra Pradesh for Monday (October 27) in view of the cyclonic storm ‘Montha’, which is likely to be formed on Monday morning.

The districts where a red alert has been sounded are: SPSR Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema and Kakinada. Except for the three districts of Anantapur, Kurnool and Sri Sathya Sai, the remaining districts have been issued orange alerts as ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ is likely on Monday (October 26). There is a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in the districts where a red alert has been given.

On Tuesday (October 28), red and orange alerts have been given for 22 districts and on Wednesday (October 29), red alerts have been given for the coastal districts, excluding SPSR Nellore, Tirupati and Prakasam.

The deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal, formed at 5.30 a.m. on Sunday (October 26), moved west-northwestwards with a speed of six kmph during past six hours, and lay centred over the same region at 8.30 a.m. It is 830 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam and of Kakinada.

It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday (October 27) morning and into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by Tuesday (October 28) morning. Continuing to move north-northwestwards, it is very likely to cross Andhra Pradesh coast around Kakinada during the evening of October 28. The wind speed would be around 90-100 kmph, and may touch 110 kmph. This is the third Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) after ‘Asani’ in 2022 and ‘Michaung’ in 2023 to cross the A.P. coast.

Under the influence of the deep-depression, squally weather is likely to prevail with wind speed reaching upwards of 65 kmph from October 27. The speed may gust up to 110 kmph from October 28 evening to early hours of October 29. The winds would gradually decrease to 45-55 kmph by October 29 evening.

The IMD has warned that the sea condition may be ‘very rough’ along and off the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Monday (October 27). It would further worsen, becoming ‘very rough’ to ‘high’ on October 28 and then to ‘very high’ from October 28 evening onwards. Thereafter, it would come back to the state of ‘very rough’ by October 29 night.

Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a high wave alert for the coasts of Ramachandrapuram-Kaviti in Srikakulam district and from Mukkam to Chintapalli in Vizianagaram district on October 27.

Such alerts have also been issued for the coasts of Palmanpeta-Bheemunipatnam in Visakhapatnam district and Antarvedi to Perumallapuram in East Godavari district on October 27. The institute has advised suspension of all recreational activities as there may be wave surges in the range of 2.1 to 4 metres.

According to information from the A.P. State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), nine State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams and seven National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been formed for carrying out rescue operations.

The State government has accorded permission to District Collectors of all 26 districts for a withdrawl of ₹19 crore to meet the immediate expenses towards rescue and relief operations. While 12 districts have been allocated ₹1 crore each, other districts have received ₹50 lakh each.

Meanwhile, the State woke up to a clear sky on Sunday and except for a few places, which received very light showers, the day remained dry and partly sunny.
