Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe claimed their second U.S. Open women’s doubles title on Friday, defeating Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic and American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-4 in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The victory avenged their defeat to the same duo in last year’s Wimbledon final and capped off a flawless two-week campaign in New York.
For Dabrowski and Routliffe, their U.S. Open triumph marks their third career Grand Slam title as a pair.
A Synchronized Partnership
Dabrowski and Routliffe, both 32, entered the court in matching purple kits, a symbol of the partnership that has become one of the most effective in women’s doubles. They saved five of the seven break points they faced, relying on tight defensive play and seamless communication.
“What a wild ride," Dabrowski said afterward, turning to her teammate. “We’ve been through so much together. I feel extremely grateful to be standing alongside you as a champion today."
Routliffe, who represents New Zealand but was born in New Zealand and raised in Canada, teamed up with Dabrowski in 2023. The pair quickly found success, lifting the U.S. Open trophy that year in only their fourth tournament together.
Prize Money and Atmosphere
With the win, Dabrowski and Routliffe split a $1 million prize, a boost from last year’s $750,000 as part of the U.S. Open’s effort to elevate doubles competition.
The midday final drew a lively crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, continuing a trend of rising interest in doubles. The competition had already captured headlines earlier in the week when Venus Williams, at 45 years old, made a surprise run to the quarterfinals.
Townsend, who also reached the singles fourth round and played in the revamped mixed doubles event, praised the atmosphere despite her team’s loss.
“This is probably one of the better crowds I’ve had for a doubles final, so thank you for supporting us," she told the audience. “We try to really be great representation for the tour and to show doubles is still tennis."
