Dakshayani Velayudhan, Mammootty, Mohanlal figure in BA History Honours syllabus at Maharaja’s College

Dakshayani Velayudhan, the only Dalit woman in the Constituent Assembly, and actor Mammootty – both alumni of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam – have found a place in the syllabus for the four-year BA History Honours programme at the autonomous institution.

The life and work of Dakshayani Velayudhan, who graduated from the college in 1935, has been included in the minor course for the first semester students of the four-year undergraduate programme. She has been featured under the module on the History of Kochi in the unit titled ‘The Local and the Global: Situating Kochi in Broader Historical Current’.

Dr. Sakhariya T., Associate Professor and Head of the Department, said actor Mammootty had been included in the major elective on ‘Sensing Celluloid: The History of Film in Kerala’ for second year students. In the third module on Mainstream Cinema in Malayalam, there is a unit titled ‘Popular Actors, Stardom – Mohanlal and Mammotty era,” he said.

The third module also include units titled ‘Film as the Art of Directors – Padmarajan and Bharathan’, ‘Commercial Films – Priyadarsan-Siddique Lal – Development of Film Industry’, ‘Screenplay and Film in Localised – M.T. Vasudevan Nair – Lohithadas – Production and Distribution’, and ‘New Wave Movement (2010-2025) Lijo Jose Pellissery, Dileesh Pothan’.
