The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday (June 2, 2025) took suo motu cognisance of reports in which the residents of Siang district are opposing the proposed construction of a dam, apprehending that it may result in displacement and will adversely impact livelihood and ecology in the area. 

According to the reports, on May 23, 2025, a Human Rights activist and Convenor of the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum led a protest against the dam construction in Beging village in which approximately 400 people participated.

To deal with the situation, the government has deployed central armed forces in various areas of the in the State. Observing that the matter raises serious issues of violation of human rights, the commission had issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Arunachal Pradesh, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
