A 25-year-old nursing student was shot dead at the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Tuesday evening, allegedly by the father of his recently wedded wife.
The incident, which took place in full view of patients and staff, sparked outrage among students and raised concerns over honour-based violence.
The victim, Rahul Kumar, a second-year BSc Nursing student at DMCH, was shot at point-blank range inside the hospital premises.
The alleged assailant, Premshankar Jha, is the father of Rahul’s wife, Tannu Priya, a first-year student at the same college.
The couple had married four months ago against the wishes of Tannu’s family, reportedly due to caste differences.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack occurred in front of Tannu, reported NDTV.
Recounting the horror, she said: “He had a gun. It was my father, Premshankar Jha. He shot my husband in the chest, in front of my eyes. My husband fell into my lap."
She further alleged that her father’s actions were part of a larger family conspiracy. “We had also gone to court and said that my father and my brothers may harm me or my husband," she told reporters.
Following the shooting, enraged students and hostel residents overpowered Jha and assaulted him before police intervened.
He sustained injuries and was initially admitted to the same hospital, but is now being referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for advanced treatment, police said.
Visuals from the hospital showed chaos as students clashed with security personnel and demanded immediate justice for Rahul. Police were seen struggling to disperse the crowd and restore order.
District officials, including Darbhanga District Magistrate Kaushal Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jagannath Reddy, rushed to the scene to assess the situation. A large police force has been deployed to prevent further unrest.
Addressing the media, SSP Jagannath Reddy confirmed the sequence of events. “We first got information that a BSc (Nursing) student had been shot dead. Later, we came to know that he and a fellow student had a love marriage. Her father came and shot him," he said.
“There was a scuffle at the hospital because the students were not letting healthcare staff treat Jha. He is now being referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital. We will register a case and take necessary action," the SSP added.
An FIR is expected to be registered soon, and police say further investigation is underway.
