David Bell announces emotional retirement from NFL after life-altering injury

On his Twitter, Bell wrote a moving note to the Browns and the wider football community:"Several months ago, I was blindsided by an off-field injury that was beyond my control, which put my football future in jeopardy.After consulting with medical experts and praying, I accept that continuing to play football would literally risk life and limb.Although it is the last thing I would otherwise want to do, with a heavy heart I am announcing my retirement.”Bell’s message highlighted the difficulty of the decision, gratitude toward everyone who supported him, and his determination to carry lessons from football into the next chapter of his life.

A promising career with the Browns cut short by multiple injuries including a serious hip injury in 2024

Bell was drafted by the Browns in the third round (99th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Purdue. Over three seasons, he appeared in 31 games, recording 38 receptions for 381 yards and three touchdowns.Unfortunately, injuries plagued his career. After being released in September 2024, Bell spent time on the practice squad and was briefly promoted to the active roster for Week 2.

That’s when he suffered a dislocated hip, ending his season. In August 2025, he was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, ultimately leading to his decision to retire for health reasons.
