More than a decade after leading the line for Atletico Madrid, Spanish football legend David Villa is heading back to the club — but not in boots.

The former striker has been appointed to Atletico’s Board of Directors, marking a new chapter in his long association with the Madrid club.

“I am very happy to be able to return to the club with new responsibilities, but with the same desire to continue helping to make Atlético de Madrid greater, season after season," Villa said after the announcement.

“The club has experienced significant growth over the past few years, and I hope to contribute to our continued success. I am very grateful to have been considered for this position."

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo welcomed the move, calling Villa’s return a natural fit.

“This has always been his home," Cerezo said. “We are very pleased that he has accepted this challenge, and I am convinced that with his vast experience, he will help make Atlético de Madrid even stronger."

A Familiar Face Returns

Villa remains one of Spain’s most iconic forwards and is still the all-time top scorer for the Spanish national team. During his single season at Atletico in 2013-14, he played 47 matches, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists.

That campaign proved memorable, as Atletico clinched the La Liga title and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League, where they narrowly lost to city rivals Real Madrid.

Major Ownership Shift at Atlético

Villa’s return also comes at a time of significant structural change at the club.

Atletico confirmed that Apollo Sports Capital has completed the acquisition of a majority stake in the club after agreeing to the deal last November.

Meanwhile, Quantum Pacific Group will remain the second-largest shareholder, retaining nearly all of its existing stake — estimated to be around 25%, according to sources familiar with the deal.
