Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has officially stepped away from 'Kalki 2898 AD' sequel. According to the reports, Deepika’s character, Sumathi aka SUM-80, was initially central to the sequel but was later reduced to a cameo and this is said to be the reason for her exit from the project.As reported by India Today, shocked by the development regarding her lead role (In the first part), turning into a cameo, the actor and her team decided to exit the project.

Her departure has fueled speculation online, with reports claiming she had asked for fixed working hours, a 25 percent pay hike, and accommodation for her team. While the production house did not directly address these rumors, their statement appeared to hint at concerns about the level of commitment required.

On September 18, production house Vyjayanthi Movies released a post on X stating that a project of this scale demands full commitment and that they were parting ways with Deepika Padukone. Their Tweet read, "This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, We have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership.
And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works."

Looking ahead: a warrior avatar with Atlee
Despite this high-profile exit, Deepika’s schedule remains packed. She is next set to headline director Atlee’s upcoming action drama alongside Allu Arjun, tentatively titled AA22xA6. The project, slated to begin filming in November 2025, will see Deepika in a warrior role. When Deepika stepped into the project, the makers shared a special video and Tweeted, "The Queen marches to conquer! Welcome onboard @deepikapadukone #TheFacesOfAA22xA6.
