Flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport began stabilising on Saturday morning after a massive technical glitch disrupted air traffic across the country on Friday.

Airport authorities said the issue that crippled the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), a key component of the Air Traffic Control's flight planning process, was gradually improving and airline operations were returning to normal.

The Delhi Airport, which handles over 1,500 flight movements every day, had witnessed widespread chaos after the glitch caused delays to more than 800 flights and led to the cancellation of at least 20 on Friday.

In an advisory issued at 6.30 am on Saturday, airport officials said all concerned agencies were working diligently to minimise any inconvenience caused, urging passengers to stay in touch with their respective airlines for updated flight schedules.

"The technical issue which affected the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), that supports the Air Traffic Control flight planning process, is gradually improving," Delhi Airport said in a post on X.

"Airline operations at Delhi Airport are returning to normal, and all concerned authorities are working diligently to minimise any inconvenience caused," they said while requesting the passengers to check with their operators for flight updates," it added.

Even the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had late Friday confirmed that the technical snag at Delhi airport had been resolved, paving the way for flight schedules to be restored progressively.

"The AMSS systems are up and functional now. Due to some backlogs, there may be some delays in the normal functioning of automated operations, but the situation will be normal soon," AAI said in an official statement.

INDIGO ISSUES ADVISORY

Budget carrier IndiGo also released a statement saying the temporary AMSS outage had been fixed and that "normal operations are being progressively restored at Delhi Airport and other impacted airports in the northern region". However, the airline urged its passengers to check the status of their flights to avoid any inconvenience.

"We appreciate the efforts of the airport and ATC authorities in resolving the issue and getting systems back online. As flight operations stabilise, delays and terminal-side congestion may continue for some time," IndiGo said.
