Police have recovered a knife that Rajesh Khimji Bhai Sakriya allegedly intended to use to attack Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public grievance hearing at her Civil Lines residence on August 20.
Officials said the recovery was made after Sakriya admitted during interrogation that he had planned to use the weapon but discarded it in the area due to heavy security deployment.
He reportedly told investigators that he had picked up the knife from a vegetable vendor’s cart near New Delhi railway station.
Both Sakriya and Syed were remanded to 14 days of judicial custody last week and were produced before the court through video conferencing.
Criminal Conspiracy Charge Slapped
Delhi Police on Monday also invoked criminal conspiracy charges against Sakriya and his associate Tahseen Syed, who are both in custody.
A senior officer said the decision followed evidence indicating that the assault was premeditated and not a spontaneous act.
Earlier, the two were booked under sections related to assault.
They now face additional charges under Section 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which defines criminal conspiracy as an agreement between two or more people to commit an unlawful act or use unlawful means to commit a lawful act.
In other cases, the punishment may extend to six months imprisonment, or a fine, or both. “The case is being pursued with utmost seriousness," an officer said.
Upon reaching Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s residence, Sakriya reportedly abandoned his plan after noticing heavy security and threw away the knife he had brought with him. To gain entry, he allegedly posed as a dog trainer, police said.
Investigators disclosed that Sakriya and his associate, Tehsin Syed, were questioned together and admitted they had been preparing “something big" for the past 10–15 days.
According to officials, Tehsin is suspected to be the main conspirator who directed Sakriya to execute the plan. His possible links and background are now under investigation.
Following the incident, Delhi Police has taken over the chief minister’s security arrangements from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Officials said the security detail has since been reviewed and further strengthened.
