Central govt withdraws Z category CRPF security; Police to provide protection

NEW DELHI: The Central government has withdrawn Z category CRPF security cover for Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, just days after it was provided following an attack on her at her camp office. The security responsibility has now been transferred back to Delhi Police, according to official sources on Monday. The 51-year-old Chief Minister was attacked by a man on August 20 during a 'Jan Sunwai' programme at her Civil Lines camp office.

Her office described the incident as a "well-planned conspiracy to kill her."Following the attack, the Union home ministry had directed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) VIP security wing to provide Z category protection to Gupta. The formal orders for CRPF protection were pending when the Centre changed its decision and issued withdrawal orders instead. The Delhi Police has made progress in their investigation, arresting two individuals so far. One of them is the prime accused, Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimji, a 41-year-old auto-rickshaw driver from Rajkot, Gujarat. The security arrangement changes come amid ongoing investigation into the attack on the Chief Minister, with the case now being handled entirely by Delhi Police. The Chief Minister will continue to receive security protection, but it will be provided by Delhi Police instead of the CRPF's specialized VIP security wing.
