Teenager shot dead after minor scuffle in baraat, CISF man held
NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has arrested a CISF head constable for allegedly shooting a 17-year-old boy during a wedding procession in Shahdara's Mansarovar Park on Saturday evening.
What began as a minor scuffle, allegedly while money was being showered in the procession, ended in the death of a teen whose family migrated from Jharkhand as labourers. Police were alerted by a passer-by who reported that a child had been shot near the Community Centre in the DDA Market. When police arrived, they found the boy with a gunshot wound amid the commotion of a baraat moving through the lane. He was taken to hospital and declared brought dead.The accused officer, identified as Madan Gopal Tiwari, is posted in Kanpur and was in Delhi on leave to attend the wedding of his cousin, the groom.
He was arrested from his hometown Etawah.
Police said the dispute began when a group of children tried to enter the wedding procession, where the groom was on horseback and kin were celebrating. When kin asked the kids to move aside, they reportedly refused, triggering a quarrel. The CISF head constable, who was in Delhi to attend wedding, allegedly shot child in a fit of rage and left for Etawah, police said. The child's father told TOI that his on his way back from a shop his son came across the wedding procession and stopped since money was being thrown.
"He was collecting some thrown money, which some people there did not like. They beat him up after that. When he did not leave, the man, who was intoxicated, shot him," he said. The child's brother was present at the spot and ran back home to inform the kin. A source said, "When he gets bail, CISF will initiate an inquiry as per the law. If a person is detained for more than 48 hours, the person is deemed to be suspended."
