In a major boost to road infrastructure, the ambitious Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, one of the country’s longest and most advanced highway projects, is set to open for public use by December this year. The Rs 1.3 lakh-crore project, built under the supervision of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), promises to revolutionise travel across six states, drastically reducing journey time between Delhi and Mumbai.

The 1,386-kilometre expressway will connect Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, over 80% of the construction work is complete, with final touches underway on two stretches near the Maharashtra and Gujarat borders.

Two phases including the Delhi-Dausa-Sawai Madhopur section (293 km) and the Jhalawar-Ratlam-MP/Gujarat border stretch (245 km) have already been opened to traffic. These operational corridors have significantly eased travel for commuters in parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

By December, several key sections, including Jawaharlal Nehru Port (95 km), Surat-Virar-Mumbai (291 km), Bharuch-Surat (38 km), MP border-Gujarat (148 km), and Sawai Madhopur-Jhalawar (159 km), are expected to be fully functional. Once completed, the expressway will link major cities such as Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Udaipur, Indore, Bhopal, Surat, and Mumbai.

Officials say that the new high-speed corridor will transform intercity travel, cutting travel time between Delhi and Mumbai from nearly 24 hours to just 12 hours. For passengers who often rely on trains for long-distance journeys, the expressway will offer a fast, convenient, and scenic alternative.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is part of a broader vision to modernise the country’s highway network, boost connectivity, and support economic corridors that link industrial, logistics, and tourism hubs across western and central states.
