An Air India Express flight from Delhi to Patna was diverted to Varanasi on Saturday evening due to adverse weather conditions in Bihar’s capital city, airline officials said.
Flight IX-1014, which was scheduled to land at Patna airport at 5:40 pm, was rerouted after poor visibility and rainfall made landing conditions unsafe, said officials, adding that the flight landed in Varanasi as a precaution.
“Air India Express flight IX1014 from Delhi (DEL) to Patna (PAT) on 21 June 2025 was diverted to Varanasi (VNS). Due to adverse weather conditions, one of our flights to Patna was diverted briefly to Varanasi. When the weather improved, the flight resumed and landed in Patna. We regret the delay caused by circumstances beyond our control," news agency ANI quoted Air India Express Spokesperson as saying.
The aircraft later departed from Varanasi and landed in Patna at 7:54 pm, with the return flight to Delhi taking off at 8:47 pm. The airline stated that the decision to divert was taken in the interest of passenger safety.
A day earlier, an IndiGo flight operating from Guwahati to Chennai with 168 passengers on board was compelled to make an emergency landing at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport after the captain issued a ‘Mayday’ alert, citing low fuel.
The flight, 6E-6764 (Airbus A321), had initially attempted to land in Chennai, but the pilot aborted the landing shortly after the aircraft’s landing gear made contact with the runway.
A source said that the approach seemed unstable, leading the pilot to initiate a sharp climb.
