In one of the most shocking revelations in the Delhi rape-murder case, the man accused of kidnapping, raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl in South Delhi was working as a cab driver despite having a criminal history in Bihar. Delhi Police have sent notices to Ola, Uber and Rapido seeking records related to his employment.

The accused, Bashu Kumar Singh, 29, kidnapped the girl when she was sleeping with her family members on a pavement near Chhatarpur metro station in Mehrauli.

Police has sought details including his onboarding documents, verification reports and work history from the major cab aggregators. Investigators are examining whether adequate background checks were conducted before he was allowed to operate on the platforms.

Accused Has Five Criminal Cases Registered Against Him

The scrutiny follows revelations that Singh has five criminal cases registered against him in Bihar. Police records show that the cases, filed between 2015 and 2022, include two allegations of attempt to murder and three others related to assault and violent disputes. He is also accused of attacking a police officer in Bihar’s Khagaria district.

According to investigators, Singh had been driving a rented hatchback since 2023 and was associated with three app-based cab services. The owner of the vehicle, a resident of Gurugram, has also been questioned as part of the ongoing probe.

After Rape & Murder, Accused Resumed Taking Rides Within Hours

Police was particularly struck by what happened after the alleged offence. According to police, Singh returned to his rented accommodation in Chakkarpur, Gurugram, changed his clothes and resumed work within hours.

“He started taking rides again around 6 am as if nothing had happened," a police officer said.

Police said Singh continued accepting ride bookings until he was apprehended in Vikaspuri after dropping off a passenger.

The accused was tracked using CCTV footage and technical surveillance, officials said. During interrogation, Singh allegedly confessed to the crime and later guided investigators to the location where the girl’s body had been hidden under stones.

Before working as a cab driver, Singh was employed as a security guard, police said.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Investigators said a chargesheet will be filed as soon as the probe is completed.
