A powerful explosion near the historic Red Fort on Monday evening caused extensive damage to several vehicles and nearby structures, according to an FIR registered by police. The FIR reviewed by News18 also said that the Police chowki which was a few steps away from the blast spot also got heavily damaged.
The FIR has been written on first the person account of a policeman who was at the Police Chowki and among first responders.
As per the FIR, the incident occurred around 6:50 pm, only a few steps away from the Red Fort police chowki, which bore the brunt of the impact. The force of the blast was so severe that even the police post was damaged. Officials said repair work on the chowki is already underway.
According to the FIR, the on-duty police officer stationed at the Red Fort chowki rushed to the scene immediately after hearing the deafening explosion. Upon reaching, he found vehicles engulfed in flames and debris scattered across the area.
The officer quickly alerted the control room, calling in additional police teams, fire tenders, and ambulances. Emergency services reached the spot soon after and began rescue operations.
Preliminary assessments in the FIR state that seven cars, one tempo, two motorcycles, one scooter, and four rickshaws were damaged in the explosion.
The FIR mentions eight people were dead, while the death toll later increased to 13. By the time the FIR was filed, authorities had confirmed eight fatalities. The identities of the victims are yet to be officially released, pending notification of families.
A case has been registered in Kotwali Police station, under section 16/18 UAPA, 3/4 Explosives Act 103(1)/109(1)/61(2) BNS.
Senior officers from the Delhi Police, forensic experts, and the National Security Guard (NSG) bomb disposal unit reached the site to collect evidence and determine the cause of the blast. The area has since been cordoned off, and a case has been registered under relevant sections related to explosives and murder.
