Delhi’s peak power demand hits 8,439 MW

New Delhi: Amid scorching summer heat, Delhi’s peak power demand touched 8,439 MW on May 25, which is the highest recorded so far in 2026 and the highest ever peak power demand in the first 25 days of May.According to data from State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), the city’s power demand has crossed the 8,000 MW mark four times within six days as a result of the impact of an early and swelting summer heat. Earlier, the peak demand had touched 8,231 MW on May 21 and 8,039 MW on May 20.An official said that the latest power demand was significantly higher than previous years. In May 2025, Delhi’s peak power demand never crossed 8,000 MW and stood at 7,748 MW.

In comparison, the highest demand recorded in May 2024 was 8,302 MW.Data also showed that between May 1 and May 25 this year, Delhi’s peak power demand was higher than the corresponding day in 2025 on 20 out of 25 days, and higher than 2024 on 18 out of 25 days.Power distribution companies said they were able to meet the surging demand without major outages. BSES discoms said they successfully supplied peak loads of 3,745 MW in BRPL areas and 1,820 MW in BYPL areas.

Separately, Tata Power-DDL said it met a peak demand of 2,416 MW in North Delhi without network constraints or power disruption. The three discoms together supply power to most parts of the city. The discom officials said they managed to ensure uninterrupted supply even during the record peak demands due to multiple measures taken by them such as advance planning, bilateral power purchase arrangements and deployment of technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning-based demand forecasting systems.“Delhi’s electricity demand is expected to rise further in the coming weeks. As per SLDC projections, against the all-time high peak demand of 8,656 MW recorded in 2025, the city’s power requirement is likely to cross 9,000 MW during the current summer season,” said an official.
