The State government has released a design of the proposed flyover that will connect the two national highways passing through Belagavi city. Work will start soon and it is expected to be completed in the next three years. The estimated cost of the project is ₹4,500 crore.

The five-kilometre-long flyover will connect the Bengaluru-Pune National Highway and the Belagavi-Goa National Highway.

It will have a circular rotary inter-pass at the Rani Channamma Circle. The multi-lane flyover will have bylanes that connect eight roads that lead to the city from various nearby towns. It is expected to ease traffic in the city and also improve connectivity to Hubballi-Dharwad and Panaji from Belagavi.

Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi has said that the Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has approved the State government’s proposal to build the flyover. Mr. Jarkiholi has urged Mr. Gadkari to share the cost of the project.

The flyover will be built from the National Highway 48 passing through Sankam Hotel, Ashoka Circle, RTO Circle and connect the National Highway 748 at the Dharmaveer Sambhaji Circle.

It will have access control features and ramps will be built near the Central Bus Stand, RTO Circle, Rani Channamma Circle and Sri Krishna Devaraya Circle.

Public Works Department officials have worked with National Highway Authorities of India engineers to prepare the schematic design.

The multi-lane structure will be placed above 200 pillars. The width will vary from 8 m to 40 m at different places as it will have two-lane and four-lane stretches.

It will pass over some railway crossings and will be planned to include future track expansions. The consultancy agency that prepared the detailed project report is Hubballi-based VLS Consultants.

Apart from reducing idling time at traffic junctions at Ashoka Circle, Central Bus Stand, Rani Channamma Circle, it will provide direct connectivity to residents of North Belagavi extensions like Mahantesh Nagar and Gandhi Nagar to the two National Highways.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan said that the demand for land for the flyover is minimal and acquisition can be completed in a few months.

He said that he has urged officials of all departments concerned to work in coordination with the Railway Ministry and agencies like NHAI to obtain swift approvals and complete the project on time.
