As tensions continue to escalate in West Asia, Iran’s largest petrochemical facility was struck in an Israeli attack on Monday. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the “powerful strike" on the petrochemical complex.

The military “just carried out a powerful strike on Iran’s largest petrochemical facility, located in Asaluyeh — a central target responsible for about 50 per cent of the country’s petrochemical production", Katz said in a video statement. The facility accounts for nearly half of Iran’s petrochemical output, making it a critical economic target. Follow for live updates

South Pars Hit Last Month Also

The facility in the Pars region services Iran’s South Pars natural gas field, the largest known gas reserve in the world, which it shares with Qatar, and which Israel had previously hit last month.

The strike follows a similar attack on the Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Zone in Khuzestan province over the weekend, where Iranian officials reported five fatalities. Katz claimed both sites together represent around 85 per cent of Iran’s petrochemical exports and are now out of operation, describing the impact as “a severe economic blow."

Meanwhile, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Asaluyeh complex had been “destroyed" and framed the offensive as part of a broader effort to cripple Iran’s financial networks. “We are eliminating factories, we are eliminating operatives, and yes, we are continuing to eliminate senior figures," Netanyahu said in a statement.

Iran’s National Petrochemical Company confirmed a fire at the Pars facility but said it had been contained, with no casualties reported. “The situation is currently under control, and technical aspects, as well as the extent of the damage, are under investigation," it said.

Another Petrochemical Site Attacked

Further strikes were reported later in the day in Marvdasht, where another petrochemical site caught fire before being brought under control. Israel had also targeted gas facilities in Asaluyeh last month, prompting retaliatory attacks by Iran on energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar. Tehran had warned of the “complete destruction" of Gulf energy assets if such strikes continued.

Israeli military spokesman Nadav Shoshani said the conflict would persist unless directed otherwise: “Iran is attacking us. We’re attacking them." He added, “If there is a ceasefire and our political echelon decides to direct us, we’ll be quick to act."

Israel has increasingly focused on Iran’s industrial base, with Netanyahu recently claiming strikes had wiped out about 70 percent of the country’s steel production capacity.
