The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday directed enhanced safety inspections of Air India’s Boeing 787-8/9 fleet in the wake of the fatal plane crash near Ahmedabad airport.

At least 265 people were killed on Thursday when a London-bound Air India flight crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff and burst into flames, marking one of India’s worst air disasters in recent years.

“As a preventive measure DGCA hereby directs M/s Air India to carryout following additional maintenance actions on 8787-8/9 aircrafts equipped with Genx engines with immediate effect in coordination with the concerned regional DGCA offices," said the official statement of DGCA.

In its directive, the airline regulator has also mandated a one-time pre-departure check for all flights from India, effective from 00:00 hours on June 15, 2025.
