The traffic congestion in Dhaula Kuan may soon come to an end as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started work to widen the carriageway near Subroto Park Air Force Station.
The stretch on the left-hand side towards Gurugram is being expanded from two lanes to four, an official statement announced on Friday.
“In order to improve traffic flow and enhance connectivity between Dhaula Kuan and Delhi Airport, NHAI has undertaken widening of the carriageway on LHS (towards Gurugram) from 2 Lane to 4 Lane at the Subroto Park Air Force Station in New Delhi," the NHAI announced.
While it was only a small section, crossing it during peak traffic could take about 20 to 30 minutes – a critical window for those going to the airport.
The move aims to eliminate a major bottleneck at the Parade Road underpass, where the road currently narrows from four lanes to two due to a metro pillar positioned along the edge of the carriageway.
To create space for road widening, relocation of drain, peripheral road and building of the Air Force Station is being done. The project is expected to be completed in about six months.
“The project also includes construction of a new Foot Over Bridge (FOB) near Subroto Park Air Force Station at the starting of RTR flyover, for enhancing safety and providing better connectivity to pedestrians," the NHAI added.
Apart from this, the project will have an enhanced drainage system that will help in efficient disposal of rain and surface water. The initiative also focuses on environmental sustainability, which includes plans for tree transplantation as well as deployment of anti-smoke guns and water sprinklers to minimise pollution during construction.
The NHAI will also deploy traffic marshals, tow-away cranes, and safety cones to manage moving traffic on the National Highway during the project implementation.
Once completed, the widened stretch is expected to ease one of the city’s worst choke points and improve connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram.
