The Lamborghini, which crashed and caused the death of Liverpool’s Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother early on Thursday, suffered a burst tyre while overtaking.
According to the police, Jota’s car veered off the road and burst into flames. Evidence at the scene of the crash near the Spanish city of Zamora suggests the luxury car suffered a burst tyre.
The Civil Guard told the BBC that the vehicle veered off a motorway and burst into flames shortly after midnight in the municipality of Cernadilla. Confirming the deaths of Jota, 28, and his brother Andre, 26, it said: “Everything points to the blowout of a tyre while it (the vehicle) was overtaking."
Police said the car crash took place along an isolated stretch of the Rias Bajas Highway near Palacios de Sanabria. The Lamborghini was in flames when they found it, and firefighters were called in as the blaze spread into the nearby vegetation.
They said they are investigating the causes of the accident, but there were no other vehicles involved. The bodies were undergoing forensic analysis, and it is not yet clear who was driving the car, they added.
Jota had married his childhood sweetheart and longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, posting a video of their wedding on Instagram just hours before the accident. They had three children during a relationship spanning 10 years.
WHO WAS DIOGO JOTA?
Jota – former Atletico Madrid, Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers star – was instrumental in Liverpool cruising to their 20th Premier League title last season for which he scored nine goals in all competitions.
He was capped 49 times by Portugal, and moved to England in 2017 joining Wolves. His impressive form earned a £45 million ($62 million) move to Liverpool three years later where he quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his goal-scoring prowess.
The Portuguese scored 65 times for the Reds in his five seasons at the club and lifted the League Cup and FA Cup in the 2021/22 season. His brother Andre played as a midfielder for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second tier.
