‘Do Aur Do Paanch’ reboot on cards with Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol? Producer Deepak Mukut clears the buzz

According to producer Deepak Mukut, a fresh take on the 1980 hit 'Do Aur Do Paanch' is currently in development, backed by the official rights for a remake. The project may evolve into either a full-fledged remake or a sequel—initially imagined with Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol—designed to resonate with today’s audiences while preserving its nostalgic essence.

Speculation has been rife about a fresh take on the 1980 classic ‘Do Aur Do Paanch’, and producer Deepak Mukut has now addressed the buzz. While filmmaker Rohit Shetty recently denied that ‘Golmaal 5’ draws inspiration from the old caper, Mukut revealed that a separate project linked to the original is indeed in development.Speaking to Mid-Day, Mukut confirmed that the film is currently in the writing phase. Mukut also emphasised that he holds the official rights to the 1980 entertainer, which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. This makes his banner the only one legally positioned to revisit the story.

Plans featuring Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol

Mukut disclosed that the idea is not new and had been explored nearly ten years ago. At the time, filmmaker Kunal Kohli was expected to helm a remake, with Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol stepping into the roles originally played by Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor.

However, the project failed to move forward due to various hurdles. Despite that setback, Mukut appears keen to revive the concept. He noted that the two actors share an appealing on-screen chemistry, making them ideal choices even today.According to the producer, the creative direction of the new film has not yet been finalised. He is still weighing whether the project should be a faithful remake, a sequel continuing the story, or simply a film inspired by ‘Do Aur Do Paanch’.

Mukut expressed a preference for bringing Abhishek and Bobby together again, suggesting that their pairing could give the revival a contemporary yet nostalgic appeal. For now, the team is focused on shaping a script that honours the spirit of the original while appealing to modern audiences.

A final call on the format will be taken once the screenplay is locked.

Rumours around ‘Golmaal 5’ prompted legal caution

Talks of linking 'Golmaal 5' to the 1980 hit had also reached Mukut, prompting him to act swiftly. He stated that he issued a formal notice in a trade publication to clarify his ownership of the remake rights and to prevent unauthorised adaptations. Soon after, Rohit Shetty publicly dismissed the reports, calling them inaccurate and misleading. This clarification effectively separated the comedy franchise from any association with ‘Do Aur Do Paanch’.

Meanwhile, Mukut’s own version remains a possibility, though still in its early stages.
