Doctors at Medicover Cancer Institute, Hyderabad, have successfully performed a robotic-assisted breast-axillo insufflation thyroidectomy (RABIT) on a 50-year-old patient from Sudan.
The patient, who travelled to Hyderabad seeking advanced care, underwent the RABIT procedure and was discharged within 48 hours, with no visible sign of surgery on his neck.
In this procedure, instead of making a visible cut on the neck, surgeons access the thyroid gland through small, discreet incisions made in the armpit (axilla) and upper chest. This robotic approach not only reduces surgical pain and shortens recovery time but also delivers a cosmetically superior outcome, free of neck scars, said Dr. Ajay Varun Reddy, senior robotic surgical oncologist and cancer surgeon.
