As at least 20 people were killed in two strikes at a hospital in Gaza’s Khan Younis, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Monday clarified that it does not “intentionally" target civilians and blamed Hamas for creating “impossible conditions" during the war that has been ongoing for nearly two years.
The IDF accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals, as shields, putting civilian lives at risk. They said that Hamas has operated from the Nasser Hospital in the past.
“Hamas began this war, creating impossible fighting situations and is preventing its end by still holding 50 of our hostages," an IDF official said in a video on X.
He said that an investigation has been initiated and the IDF regrets “regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals and does not target journalists as such".

Israeli PM Expresses Regret
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday expressed regret over the strike that killed 20, including five journalists, at the hospital.
“Israel deeply regrets the tragic mishap that occurred today at the Nasser Hospital in Gaza. Israel values the work of journalists, medical staff, and all civilians," a statement by his office said.
Contributors for Reuters, Associated Press and Al Jazeera were among those killed in the strikes, the three news agencies said.
The three news agencies issued statements mourning their contributors who died.
Around 200 media persons have been killed during the nearly two-year Israel-Hamas war, AFP reported, citing media watchdogs.
Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said that an Israeli explosive drone struck a building at the hospital, which was followed by an air strike as the injured persons were being evacuated.
