US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs of up to 200% on pharmaceuticals imported into the United States, signaling his administration’s most aggressive move yet to shift drug manufacturing back to American soil.

“They’re going to be tariffs at a very high rate, like 200%," Donald Trump said during a Cabinet meeting, adding, “We’ll give them a certain period of time to get their act together- about a year, year and a half."

While the tariffs would not take effect immediately, the US President indicated the policy rollout could come “very soon." Donald Trump’s remarks follow a months-long Section 232 investigation into whether reliance on imported drugs poses a national security risk, a legal tool that previously paved the way for his steel and aluminum tariffs.

Policy Details Expected Soon

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that final decisions on pharmaceutical tariffs will be made at the end of the month, once the administration’s internal review is completed.

“With pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, those studies are being completed… and then the president will set his policies," Howard Lutnick said.

The pharmaceutical industry has pushed back hard against the idea, warning that steep tariffs could drive up costs, disrupt the global drug supply chain and hamper investments in research and development. Major companies like Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson and AbbVie are among those watching the decision closely.
