In a stunning U-turn that’s not short of a last-minute hijack in the Premier League, Chelsea FC have reportedly cancelled forward Nicolas Jackson’s all-but-done move to Bayern Munich minutes before he was supposed to undergo a medical. As per The Athletic, Chelsea informed the German giants that they won’t proceed with the move and wanted Jackson back in London to cover for Liam Delap’s hamstring injury suffered on Saturday.

Delap went down in the match against Fulham, which Chelsea won 2-0, and had to be replaced in the first half. With Enzo Maresca playing both Number 9s, Delap and Joao Pedro, together, and Cole Palmer also injured, they had to bring in winger Tyrique George in his place. Later, Maresca said that Delap would be out for several weeks, a sizeable blow in light of Chelsea’s packed schedule with Champions League and club games.

“Hopefully it’s not long, but this kind of case can be six, eight weeks," Maresca said. “When you have two strikers it is enough, when one of them is injured for weeks it is not enough. Today we played for more than one hour with Tyrique and he did brilliant. The last time he played as a No 9 was against Manchester United last year. We tried to use different solutions. If you remember there were some games where we used Pedro (Neto) as a No 9. But for sure when you have two proper No 9’s it is enough," he added.

Jackson is said to be unhappy with the change of plans at the eleventh hour. At the time the news broke, pictures of him arriving in Germany and shaking the hands of officials with a smile on his face were going viral. Bayern had agreed a loan deal with an option to buy for the Senegal international, worth a total package of €80million (£69m; $93.5m; Rs. 825 crore).

It represented a significant deal for Bayern as well, who have been looking to reinforce their frontline all summer. While Chelsea will work on re-integrating the likely dissappointed star forward, Bayern will have to scramble for a replacement, with just a few hours to go till the window shuts.
