Driver banned ‘indefinitely’ for taking safari vehicle too close to tiger

Nainital: Forest authorities have “indefinitely” barred a safari driver after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed a vehicle approaching a tiger too closely in the Phato tourism zone adjoining Corbett Tiger Reserve.According to forest officials, the driver, Jubair (38), allegedly drove a safari vehicle dangerously close to a tiger, causing the animal to panic and move away.Following an inquiry, divisional forest officer of Terai West Forest Division, Prakash Chandra Arya, ordered action against the driver. Officials said Jubair has been “indefinitely” barred from entering any of the Phato tourism zones under the division.

The vehicle involved in the incident has also been prohibited from operating until further orders.The incident came to light after BJP functionary Madan Joshi shared a video on Facebook that purportedly showed the vehicle approaching the tiger at close range. Following the video’s circulation, the forest department launched an inquiry.Forest officials said the local ranger has been directed to initiate legal proceedings against the driver under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and the Indian Forest Act, 1927.

Speaking to TOI, Joshi alleged that some newly inducted drivers were disregarding safety norms in an attempt to provide tourists with closer wildlife sightings. “Such practices could endanger both wildlife and visitors and damage the reputation of the tourism zone,” he said.Joshi also claimed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and that concerns had been raised before the safari began. Forest officials, however, have not confirmed the allegation.The forest department said approaching wild animals too closely or interfering with their natural behaviour to facilitate better sightings constitutes a serious violation of wildlife tourism regulations. Officials warned safari drivers and guides to strictly adhere to prescribed safety protocols.
