Remember the iconic scene from Sholay in which a drunk Veeru, played by Dharmendra, climbs a village water tank and creates a dramatic spectacle? A somewhat similar scene unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district — only this time, there was no Basanti.

An inebriated man climbed onto an 11,000-volt high-tension power line and lay on the wires for nearly an hour, leaving residents of Bhitauli village stunned.

The man escaped unhurt because the electricity supply on the line had reportedly been disrupted minutes earlier. After receiving information, police reached the spot and alerted power department officials to ensure that the supply remained cut off until the man was safely brought down.

According to reports, the man told people that he had climbed the power line because he wanted some fresh air. Some locals, however, claimed he was upset over a power outage.

After he was rescued and brought down, the man was unable to give the police a clear explanation for his actions.

Videos of the incident, which have gone viral on social media, show residents anxiously watching from below, with some even urging the man to hold onto the wires properly as officials worked to bring him down safely.
