Jessica Pegula calls out edited WTA post.Image via: Getty
American tennis star Jessica Pegula probably expected nerves before a WTA 1000 final. What she did not expect was to be trending online because of a badly edited photo. Just hours before her Dubai Tennis Championships showdown with Elina Svitolina, the WTA posted a promotional graphic of the two finalists.
It should have been routine hype. Instead, fans immediately noticed something strange. Pegula’s waist looked unrealistically tiny and parts of her arm appeared to vanish into the background. Within minutes, tennis Twitter and Instagram were buzzing. Pegula saw it too. And she was not going to ignore it.
The photo fail that went viral
Rather than letting the internet do the talking, Pegula jumped straight into the comments. She kept it short and very clear.
“WTF happened to my body?” Pegula commented under the post on Instagram. She then took the joke even further on X, leaning into the awkwardness with dry humour. “Thank you for giving me the waist of my dreams but I think pieces of my arm are also missing. Not sure what happened here.”The WTA deleted the image soon after and uploaded the correct version. The issue appeared to stem from a background removal mistake that erased the white sections of Pegula’s outfit.
But by then, screenshots were everywhere. It had already become a viral moment in tennis news.Other players did not waste time joining in. Former American pro Jennifer Brady chimed in with: “Waist of your dreams?” Madison Keys, fresh off her Australian Open title run, added her own playful reaction: “That waist is SNATCHED #nophotoshop.” She followed up with another line aimed directly at Pegula: “All those 3 setters have you disappearing.”
Through all the noise, Pegula stayed focused. When it was time to compete, she delivered.
The American beat Svitolina 6-2, 6-4 to lift her fourth WTA 1000 trophy and strengthen her head to head record against the Ukrainian. After the win, and just days before her 32nd birthday, Pegula reflected on what the title meant. “I couldn’t ask for a better birthday present. I’m just super proud of myself. I had to play at a very high level, it was awesome,” she said.
She also opened up about her mindset during the week. “I feel like when you can get off to a quick start, that eases the nerves a little bit.”Looking back at a tough semi final, she added, “Mentally, I think, especially the match yesterday, I was down a set and 3-1, and I fought back, which made me feel free today. I trusted the things we’ve been working on and it paid off.”Dubai gave Pegula a viral moment, plenty of laughs and another big title. Not a bad week after all.
