Kolkata: The collapse of the Dum Dum municipal board is now imminent following the consecutive resignations of its chairman, Harinder Singh, and vice chairman, Barun Natta, on Tuesday.
The duo handed over their resignation letters to the municipality’s executive officer, citing severe infrastructural distress.Singh, a veteran councillor for 33 years who helmed the civic body for over a decade, blamed a crippling staff shortage and a long-standing freeze on recruitment for his exit. He stated that the escalating workload made it impossible to deliver essential public services. Efforts to mitigate the crisis using retired employees were thwarted after the state’s new regime objected to the practice, bringing civic work to a complete standstill. This development follows the resignation of Barrackpore Municipality chairman Uttam Das on Monday, which similarly triggered the collapse of that civic board.
