Durgapur Gang-Rape: MBBS Student Says Classmate Molested Her, Fled; 2 Accused Offer To Confess

The MBBS student who was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur has told police that her classmate molested her and fled the scene before the attack.

According to a TOI report, the 23-year-old survivor said in her complaint that the classmate, Wasef Ali, groped her and escaped while she was struggling to fight off the attackers.

The report added that two of the six accused, Sk Riyazuddin and Sk Safiq, have filed a plea before a local court seeking permission to confess their role in the October 10 crime. Police said if the court accepts the plea, the two could be treated as approvers during the trial.

The medical student was allegedly gang-raped shortly after stepping out of her campus for dinner with Ali. The accused, Riyazuddin, Safiq, Nasiruddin Sk, Apu Bauri, Firdaus Sk, and Ali, are all in custody.

Riyazuddin, a former guard at the medical college, and Safiq, a factory worker, were sent to judicial custody for two days to reconsider their decision to confess. The court will issue its order on October 21.

In her detailed statement to police and a magistrate, the survivor said one of the men raped her while two others watched. Later, Riyazuddin and Safiq arrived and, instead of helping, allegedly called the attackers back, demanding ₹3,000 from the student. They took ₹200 and her phone.

Lawyer Partha Ghosh, representing the survivor, said, “We have filed an appeal that a test identification parade be done quickly." The maximum punishment for gang rape is 20 years in jail, while extortion carries a seven-year sentence.
