Gabrielle Union marks 25 years of Bring It On with nostalgic tribute

Gabrielle Union, who played Isis, the cheerleader leading the East Compton Clovers, looked back at the movie that first made her famous. She shared a short video filled with fan edits and iconic cheerleading moments. In her caption, Union wrote, “25 years later and the spirit lives on! Back then, I never imagined the blessings that came with stepping into that Clover uniform.

It truly is the gift that keeps giving.”

Union also spoke in the video, saying, “I cannot believe… 25 years. That's a quarter of a century since Bring It On came out," she said, remembering shooting in San Diego in 1999. The cast believed they were simply producing a lighthearted film about cheerleaders. Rather, the movie grew to be a teenage classic that also brought up issues of race, animosity, and identity. She added, “Fans have shown up since day one and continue to inspire new generations of Bring It On-ers. All the Clovers and the Toros, you have been bringing it with your spirit fingers!”Union also honored her late co-star Natina Reed, who played Jenelope, saying, “Much love always, and to our forever Clover, Natina Reed.”

The 25th anniversary brought reflection too. Union admitted that when she first played Isis, she held back her anger on screen. “I muzzled her,” she confessed. “I made her appropriate when I should have allowed her to be angry. That was my failure.”Her honesty struck fans, showing that even with a beloved role, she still questions her choices years later.
