The 2025 NFL season opener already promised high drama with the Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off their Super Bowl victory, hosting their long-time NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

But before either team takes the field, Mother Nature could prove to be the toughest opponent of the night.

Severe thunderstorms could disrupt the NFL’s first game of 2025

According to the National Weather Service, storms are expected to roll into the Philadelphia area around 8 p.m. ET, right as kickoff is scheduled at Lincoln Financial Field. The forecast calls for a 60% chance of precipitation, with the potential for 40 mph wind gusts and small hail. A Special Weather Statement from the NWS warned that “a few thunderstorms could produce brief strong wind gusts near 40 mph and small hail.

If those conditions develop near the stadium, the NFL may be forced to delay its highly anticipated primetime showcase. Rain is expected to taper off before 11 p.m., but any early storms could leave the field slick and impact play in the opening half.

Current conditions remain calm, but fans should stay alert

Just hours before kickoff, the Eagles posted a video of their empty stadium, showing partly cloudy skies and no immediate signs of severe weather. Whether that video was live or pre-recorded, the atmosphere in South Philadelphia appeared calm in the afternoon.

Still, fans and players alike have been advised to keep an eye on the skies as the evening progresses. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 84 degrees and dip to around 65 degrees by nightfall, with winds ranging from 5–15 mph. Also Read: Patriots’ depth chart for Week 1 reveals big names, shock inclusions, and hidden gems for 2025 NFL seasonFor the Eagles and Cowboys, the storm forecast adds another unpredictable layer to a rivalry already built on intensity.
